The 2025 season of the Peruvian Football Championship, known as Liga 1, began with significant changes to its format. The tournament is now divided into two stages: the Apertura and the Clausura. Each stage is contested by 18 teams, who play a single round-robin schedule. After each stage, the leader is crowned champion of that stage.
The champion of the Apertura and the champion of the Clausura qualify directly for the finals of the season. If the same team wins both stages, that team is automatically declared the national champion. Additionally, after both stages, a cumulative table determines the two teams that will be relegated.
The season’s grand final is a two-legged playoff between the winners of the Apertura and Clausura. In case of a tie on aggregate points or goal difference, the champion is decided by a penalty shootout. The winner of the final secures the national title and earns a spot in the next edition of the Copa Libertadores.
The total number of matches per team increases compared to previous seasons, with a longer calendar that includes international breaks. The Apertura started in February, and the Clausura is scheduled to begin after a short break in mid‑2025.
