Melbourne Mustangs vs Central Coast Rhinos on 14 June
The Kansas City Current have become the first team in the National Women’s Soccer League to go unbeaten at home across an entire regular season. On Sunday, they capped off this remarkable run with a dramatic 3-3 draw against the San Diego Wave in front of a sold-out crowd at CPKC Stadium.
The Current finished the regular season with 8 wins and 5 draws at home, securing 29 out of a possible 39 points. Their overall record stands at 15 wins, 8 losses, and 3 draws. However, their dominant home form has positioned them as serious contenders heading into the playoffs.
A record-breaking milestone
No other NWSL team has ever gone undefeated at home over a full season. The Current achieved this milestone in just their second year at CPKC Stadium, the first venue built specifically for a women’s professional team. This fortress-like atmosphere gave them a clear edge, as they dropped points at home only five times all year — all in draws.
“We talk a lot about making this place a nightmare for opponents,” said head coach Vlatko Andonovski. “To go unbeaten the entire season shows the mentality and belief of this group.”
Playoff picture and the road ahead
With the regular season concluded, the Current now turn their attention to the playoffs. They finished third in the overall standings, setting up a first-round matchup against the sixth-seeded Portland Thorns. That match will take place on November 10 at CPKC Stadium, where the Current have yet to lose this season.
Meanwhile, the San Diego Wave finished fifth and will face the fourth-seeded North Carolina Courage in the opening round. The Wave will travel to Cary, North Carolina, for that match.
The NWSL playoff format includes a first-round knockout game, followed by the semifinals and the championship final. If the Current win their first-round match, they would move on to face either the second-seeded Washington Spirit or the seventh-seeded Chicago Red Stars.
Clausura success and a larger trend
Looking at the broader North American soccer landscape, the Current’s achievement fits a growing trend of teams capitalizing on home-field dominance. In Liga MX Femenil, several clubs have posted unbeaten home records during recent Clausura tournaments. The Current’s accomplishment, however, stands out in a highly competitive NWSL where parity often prevents such streaks.
The Current finished with a total of 48 points, tied for the third-best mark in league history. Their +21 goal differential also ranked among the top three in the league.
As the playoffs approach, Kansas City will rely heavily on their home supporters. “The fans pushed us through so many tough moments this season,” said forward Debinha. “Now we want to reward them with a championship.”
