The Chilean Primera División season is divided into two short tournaments: the apertura and the clausura. Each tournament determines its own champion. The apertura begins in January and ends in June; the clausura runs from July to December.
The apertura and clausura follow the same format. All 18 teams play a single round-robin schedule, facing each other once per tournament. After 17 matches, the team with the highest total points becomes the champion. If two or more teams are tied at the top, a playoff is held to decide the winner.
Three teams are relegated at the end of the clausura. Relegation is determined by a coefficients system that averages points per game over the previous three seasons. The three clubs with the lowest coefficients drop to the Primera B.
Qualification for the Copa Libertadores is based on the aggregate table of both the apertura and clausura. The top three teams in the combined standings earn Libertadores spots. The fourth and fifth places qualify for the Copa Sudamericana.
