The league consists of 11 teams that play each other twice, once at home and once away. This format is known as a double round-robin tournament. The season is divided into two short tournaments, the Apertura and the Clausura, each with its own champion.

Each short tournament features a total of 110 matches. After the regular season, the top four teams advance to the playoffs. The semifinals are played in a two-legged, home-and-away format. If the aggregate score is tied, the higher-seeded team advances. The final is also played over two legs, with the away goals rule applied. If the score remains level after both matches, the champion is decided by a penalty shootout.

In the second leg of the final, extra time is not played.
