In Guatemala, the Apertura and Clausura tournaments are the two short seasons that make up each football campaign. At the end of each season, a team is crowned champion.
Six teams qualify for the playoffs. The top two finishers in the aggregate table advance directly to the semifinals, while the remaining four clubs compete in the quarterfinals.
Unlike many other short-tournament systems, Guatemala does not stage a final between the Apertura and Clausura winners to determine an annual champion. Instead, the team with the best overall record in the league table across both tournaments is recognized as the season’s champion.
If two clubs finish level on total points, a playoff match determines the champion. If the playoff ends in a draw, the title is awarded to the team with the better goal difference.
Notably, no team has ever won both the Apertura and Clausura titles in the same season since the current format was introduced.
